“Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”
John 1:29

I
The Jordan
On the banks of the Jordan, John the Baptist baptises the crowds who come to change their lives. He lives in the desert, dressed in camel hair, and announces the coming of someone greater than himself. One morning he sees Jesus walking toward him. He points to him and speaks the words the Church still repeats at every Mass: “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”

II
The Lamb
Why a lamb? For a Jew of that time, the word awakened a precise memory: the night of Passover in Egypt, when the blood of a lamb on the doorposts protected the people from death and opened the road to freedom. Every year, lambs were offered at the Temple in memory of that deliverance. By calling Jesus “the Lamb of God”, John announces that what those sacrifices pointed to is about to be fulfilled.

III
Who takes away the sin of the world
Three years later, Jesus dies on the cross at the very hour when, in Jerusalem, the Passover lambs are being sacrificed. He does not shed another’s blood: he gives his own. This is where John’s words take on their full meaning: evil no longer has the last word. To wear the Lamb is to carry that promise: no fault is greater than the love that forgives it.
